Dear Harvard College Students:

I am excited to introduce Dr. Alta Mauro as the new Associate Dean of Students for Inclusion and Belonging at Harvard College.

Dean Mauro is currently the assistant dean of students and founding director of Spiritual Life & Intercultural Education at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) where she leads institutional efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the intercultural competence of students, staff, and faculty. Prior to joining NYUAD, Dean Mauro was director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Wake Forest University.

Dean Mauro will join the Harvard community on May 1, 2020 and will oversee the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) area within the Dean of Students Office. In this capacity, she will work with a community of experts to embed the principles of diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the co-curricular and residential experience of all Harvard College students. Further, she will provide strategy and vision for an office that both serves students of today and orients toward the future, ensuring that programs and services are responsive to the changing demographics and needs of the Harvard College student body. Dean Alex Miller will continue in the interim role as Associate Dean for Inclusion and Belonging until Dean Mauro’s arrival.

Dean Mauro earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has focused her professional work on sustained intercultural dialogue, engaging culturally-relevant pedagogy across academic disciplines, and EDI capacity-building across student affairs functions. Dean Mauro has keynoted or presented at numerous conferences; authored and/or co-authored refereed book chapters and additional articles related to EDI and global education issues; and published in a recent higher education anthology. Dean Mauro looks forward to bringing her deep expertise, passion for EDI work, and commitment to student-centered vision and strategy to Harvard.

Please join me in welcoming Dean Mauro to Harvard.
