Preparing for Spring Term

Reflection and resources for your wellbeing

LAUNCH SLEEP 101 COURSE

Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy New Year from the Yard! Over the fall term, many of you have been personally challenged by what’s going on in the world, on campus, in the media, and in your own communities as you’ve transitioned to Harvard and balanced your academics. As you’ve been on winter break for a few weeks now, please take the time to reflect on your first term in college and to think about what you would like your spring to look like and how you can utilize all of the resources available to you.

When I think back to my first semester in college, I remember being a little disappointed, because I didn’t receive the grades I wanted—thanks to taking two challenging Economics courses, as well as an advanced language where everyone but myself had spent time living abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. I was also still trying to find my friend group while not getting along with my roommate. After some reflection, the spring saw improvements in academics, as well as a more defined friendship group.

As you reflect, below are some questions to contemplate:

  • What have you enjoyed the most over the last six months? What have you enjoyed the least?

  • Is the academic workload what you thought it would be? Did you receive the grades you wanted, and, if not, what might you do differently in the spring?

  • Have you made connections with your suitemates and entryway? Is there anything you would change or add to your suitemate agreement?

  • Have you overcommitted yourself in terms of co-curricular activities, and, if so, what might you cut back on?

  • How have you been able to balance what’s going on in the world and what’s happening on campus?

  • What resources have you not yet utilized that might be helpful?

  • What are you looking forward to in the spring term?

Sleep 101 Program

As you prepare for the spring term, I would like to introduce you to the Sleep 101 program that allows students to look at their relationship with sleep and how it connects to their overall health. Several of you mentioned not getting enough sleep over the fall term, and this should help you in improving habits. We are asking all first-year students to complete the 45-minute module by Wednesday, January 31, as we believe it will be extremely beneficial moving forward.

Sleep duration, timing, and quality are especially important for young adults, who are most impacted by the adverse effects of sleep deficiency.

  • Sleep 101 is an award-winning program for college students prepared by Harvard Medical School faculty through the Sleep Matters Initiative at Brigham Health.

  • The module explores the intersections of sleep and various areas critical for a successful college experience, namely academic performance, athletics, mental and physical health, and social relationships.

The course can be found in your Harvard Training Portal. If you need help accessing or launching the course in the training portal, please reach out to trainingportalhelp@harvard.edu. If you need accommodations to access this course, please email Pallas Ziporyn at Pallas@startschoollater.net.

The Resident Deans and I are thankful for all that you have shared with us over the past few months, and we hope that you are looking forward to the spring term and all of the opportunities that still exist as you return for the second half of your first year at Harvard! While I’ve had the chance to meet many of you during the fall, I look forward to getting to know more of you throughout the next few months – please reach out to me at firstyear@fas.harvard.edu if you want to set up a time to connect.

Sincerely,
