Message from Dean Straker

Next week, some of you will be moving to campus to begin your Harvard journey, and we are looking forward to welcoming you. I suspect that you are feeling a mixture of emotions including excitement, nervousness, anticipation, and overall fear of the unknown.
These emotions are to be expected, and know that you are not alone! During your first year, you will be challenged in new and exciting ways. From learning how to share a room with a roommate, to adapting to the college workload, to navigating a new city, to finding your niche on campus. Your on-campus support network will be here to help you as you transition into the College.

Within your dorm, you will be part of a smaller community of students called an entryway. Proctors are graduate students or staff members who live in the dorms and lead your entryway in community building, support, and social activities throughout the year. Peer Advising Fellows or PAFs are upper-level students (living in the Houses) assigned to each entryway. They have lived through the first year themselves and can help provide a student perspective to your experience, as well as plan great events for you. Also living on campus are your Resident Deans, one assigned to each Yard, who oversee the academic, social, and extracurricular well-being of students.

As you spend the next week or two packing to come to campus, think about what other supports might be helpful for you. Who will you reach out to outside of campus when you need additional support? What items will you bring from home that will bring you comfort? How will you know when you need support? There are probably many more questions to reflect on as you prepare to move to campus, but know that we are here to help you figure it all out.
