SUMMER IN THE YARD | Class of 2027 Newsletter

Bikes and scooters have become popular modes of transportation for students over the last few years. While they may be helpful for some, they can have their challenges due to storage and theft. Before you bring them to campus, make sure you are familiar with information around storage and riding on campus. Scooters and bikes must be parked in appropriate locations – either a designated parking area, a rack, or inside your dorm room. When parked outside, make sure to have them locked. They cannot be placed in front entrances, dorm hallways, or attached to stairwells. Leaving bikes/scooters or riding them in the dorm or classroom hallways is both a fire hazard and impedes the accessibility of our campus. (This does not apply to wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other power-driven mobility devices.) Riding indoors is strictly prohibited.

Always wear a helmet! Check out Harvard’s micromobility guidelines for more information.

Guide to Finding Textbooks

Textbooks are essential to learning in college classes, but it can sometimes be challenging to figure out where you should get your textbooks from, and how to find the most affordable options. Once you complete course registration and finalize your fall academic schedule, Harvard’s short Guide to Finding Textbooks can help you to explore your options.

General Education

Gen Ed is a great way to explore new ideas, expand your horizons, and engage with the world! Learn more about this semester’s Gen Ed courses and Gen Ed lottery on the Gen Ed website. Questions? Stop by Gen Ed’s open advising hours, or email gened_questions@fas.harvard.edu.

Live Verification Exam (LVE)

Students who have been invited to take a French or Spanish Live Verification Exam (LVE), administered through the Language Center to fulfill their language requirement, should sign up for a time to take the exam. Emails to qualifying students were sent in early August with exam times offered beginning Wednesday, August 30, and extending into the first two weeks of classes. In order to use the placement exam to satisfy the college language requirement, students must take and pass LVE. Students who have fulfilled the language requirement with a score on an AP or SAT II test do not need to take the LVE. Similarly, students who don't plan to use the online placement exam to fulfill the language requirement do not need to take the LVE.

Biology and Chemistry Placement Exams

Biology and Chemistry Placement Exams (recommended) should be completed by Tuesday, September 5.

FEATURED RESOURCES

Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct (OAISC)

The Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct (OAISC) helps students engage with and embody the values of the Harvard College community. OAISC maintains the Harvard College Student Handbook and Honor Code, and through conversations with students, faculty, and staff, OAISC ensures the College's values and policies are a critical part of the undergraduate experience.

OAISC also works to uphold community standards, and houses both the Administrative Board and the Honor Council, which address all exceptions and violations:
  • The Administrative Board is the committee responsible for the application and enforcement of undergraduate academic regulations and standards of social conduct. The Board also evaluates exceptions (called petitions). Your Resident Dean can submit requests to the Board on your behalf and can serve as your advisor in interactions with the Board.
  • The Honor Council is made up of Harvard College community members, including students, staff, and faculty, who work together to advocate for academic integrity and respond to possible violations of the Honor Code. As you think about your first semester here, review the Honor Council’s Top Five Tips.

College Title IX

College Title IX aims to promote a Harvard College free of sexual harassment and other sexual misconduct, to educate our community about policy and Title IX compliance, and help impacted students make the most informed decisions possible about their safety and well-being. We work with students impacted in any way by sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct—including sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking—to navigate resources, learn about options, and access supportive measures. College Title IX can be reached at: collegetitleix@fas.harvard.edu.

Office for Gender Equity

The Office for Gender Equity (OGE) strives to engage all members of the Harvard community in cultivating an environment where each of us feels safe and free to participate fully in University life. OGE uses a multipronged approach to preventing and responding to sexual harassment and other sexual misconduct across three collaborative teams. To sign up for OGE’s mailing list or to get involved, scan the QR code provided above.

Student Organization Center Online (SOCO)

Remember to download the SOCO app before arriving to campus. The SOCO app will give you access to the Orientation schedule, maps, and more! If you have any questions, email soch@fas.harvard.edu.
