Take a break, relax, and have fun

First-Year Social Committee

During each month of the year, the First-Year Social Committee (FYSC) sponsors social and inclusive events, both on campus and off campus, for the entire first-year class. Some of the traditional annual events include a trip to a Red Sox Game, First-Year Formal, a tailgate before the Harvard-Yale game, and a Housing Day Eve celebration. All events hosted by the FYSC are no cost, alcohol-free, and open to the entire class (except for the Formal which is a ticketed event). First-year students interested in joining the FYSC can apply early in the fall semester. Please contact the First-Year Programming Graduate Assistant to suggest events or learn more.

Apply for the 2021-22 FYSC!

First-Year FUNds

Have an idea for a social activity that will contribute to the first-year community, but not sure where to find funding for it? You can apply for First-Year FUNds! Events supported with First-Year FUNds usually cost around $75 or less, are inclusive in nature, encourage social connections beyond the entryway, and provide a safe opportunity to meet others in the Class. Event expenses are typically paid for by the organizer and then reimbursed afterwards.

For the Fall 2021 term, with the first-year class back on campus, submissions for both in-person and virtual events will be accepted. Ideas for virtual activities might include:

  • A trivia or game night
  • A virtual experience, like a puzzle challenge or escape the room
  • A book discussion group
  • Tickets to attend a virtual performance at the A.R.T.

Students have shared ideas for free or inexpensive in-person events, but you are not limited to outings on the list. If planning a small group gathering on campus such as a game night, consider taking advantage of the First-Year Experience Office’s borrowing programs! First-year students can borrow games and kitchen supplies, free of charge. Note that any gatherings planned on campus must adhere to the current on-campus event guidance.

You can access the First-Year FUNds Application here. Proposals are reviewed on a weekly basis and should be submitted by Monday at 12:00 PM (Eastern) to receive a decision by Thursday at 5:00 PM of that week. Proposals submitted after the Monday deadline may not receive a response until the following week.

Contact the First-Year Experience Office at with any questions. Note that only first-year students are eligible to apply for First-Year FUNds.

We look forward to receiving your creative submissions!
